Marketing letters

Ernest Nicastro has written an excellent piece on how to open a sales letter. He suggest that you open with a question, be direct and concise, and that you build rapport with your reader. Read the whole thing.

Good tips.

Maybe because I was a DM copywriter for so long, I have a very short fuse when it comes to sales letters. Most hit the can before I've read the first para.

Any manager can go down to Barnes & Noble, pick up two or three basic copywriting guides, and write better sales letters in a week. Why so few do is beyond me.

Good tips indeed, also easier said than done. I just sent out a sales letter; so we will know in a few days whether I have mastered the art.
